Linebacker Frank Zombo is injured again and may not make the final roster

Inside linebacker Desmond Bishop and fullback John Kuhn were activated from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, but tight end Andrew Quarless, left tackle Derek Sherrod, offensive lineman Jaymes Brooks, outside linebacker Frank Zombo and defensive lineman Johnny Jones remain on PUP.

Quarless will almost certainly begin the season on the list, meaning he’ll miss at least the first six games. Sherrod could face a similar fate if his surgically repaired right leg doesn’t allow him to get on the practice field in the next week or two. The former Mississippi State star broke his tibia and fibula last December and then suffered what head coach Mike McCarthy recently termed a “setback” in the spring.

As for Brooks, Zombo and Jones, their chances of making the team are dwindling by the day. And it’s too bad because all three players – especially the first two – would’ve been right in the mix for spots on the final roster. Brooks is a better athlete and boasts a more impressive resumé than the other young interior linemen competing for backup jobs. And Zombo, who started in the Super Bowl only 18 months ago, has more upside than Erik Walden and Brad Jones and more experience than Dezman Moses and Vic So’oto.

There’s always a chance Brooks and Zombo could stay on PUP once the season starts, but that seems doubtful. More than likely, they’ll either be activated and eventually released or they’ll receive an injury settlement. Either way, their time in with the Packers appears to be running out. And that’s a shame.

I didn’t think Evan Dietrich-Smith was a legitimate NFL player two summers ago. After re-watching his three starts from late last season, I’ve changed my mind. He’s definitely a legitimate NFL player; he’s just not a guard. While the 26-year-old managed to survive in 188 snaps against the Giants, Oakland and Chicago, he wasn’t very impressive. The feeling here is that the Packers need to find a better No. 3 guard and allow EDS to concentrate on backing up 37-year-old center Jeff Saturday.

Dietrich-Smith is a fundamentally sound lineman who plays with an aggressive and nasty temperament. He generally stays on his feet and he often packs a punch on contact. What he lacks is athleticism. He got exposed in space quite often – especially against the Giants – and he really struggled to hit moving targets. I counted at least five plays where Dietrich-Smith’s inability to adjust to movement almost got Aaron Rodgers sacked. In each instance, only the MVP quarterback’s quick release or uncanny escapability kept him from getting taken to the ground.

The Packers can obviously get through a game or two with Dietrich-Smith at guard, but I think he’d become a liability if forced to play for an extended period of time. Ideally, one of the young linemen will step up in training camp and seize the backup position. Unfortunately, the odds of that happening aren’t very good. Ray Dominguez finished last season on the active roster, but he still has a lot to learn after starting 33 games at tackle in college. The remainder of the potential backups are either undrafted free agents or veterans who are more comfortable outside.

I used to think Jaymes Brooks had a chance to replace Dietrich-Smith as the No. 3 guard, but that was before the talented rookie from Virginia Tech injured his hamstring and sat out the entire offseason. There’s no guarantee he’ll be ready for the start of camp, and even if he is, he’ll be way behind. There’s always a chance GM Ted Thompson will acquire a veteran during the summer, but don’t bet on it. That means Dietrich-Smith will likely enter his second season as the team’s top backup at all three interior offensive line positions. And while that’s not my biggest concern in July, it could be if something happens to one of the starting guards or tackles in October.

Ex-Hokie has the talent to earn a spot on the 53-man roster

Ex-Hokie has the talent to earn a spot on the 53-man roster

General manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy seem to make room for a few undrafted free agents every year, so the odds are pretty good that at least one of the 14 rookies signed on Saturday night will still be around when the final 53-man roster is set in early September. The most intriguing player from that group might be offensive lineman Jaymes Brooks, who started 42 games at right guard for Virginia Tech.

The Packers are set on the interior of the offensive line with starters T.J. Lang, Jeff Saturday and Josh Sitton, but the depth behind them is questionable. Evan Dietrich-Smith did a decent job filling in for Sitton late last season, but he’s a very limited athlete who figures to get exposed the more he has to play. Second-year man Ray Dominguez has size and athletic ability, but he’s still learning how to play inside after lining up at tackle in college. And while Sampson Genus flashed some potential on the practice squad, he’s barely six-feet tall. That leaves the door wide open for someone to emerge and win a job in training camp. It just might be Brooks.

A lack of size and inconsistent play are the two biggest knocks against Brooks. He’s not terribly undersized (6’2, 298), but general managers prefer bigger players on the interior of the offensive line. The top 10 guards and centers selected in this weekend’s draft were on average two inches taller and 25 pounds heavier than Brooks. But that’s not what kept him from being drafted. What kept him from being drafted were his uneven performances as a senior. I watched a handful of Virginia Tech games last season and I rarely saw the same player twice. That’s because his technique tends to get sloppy at times, and when it does, he can’t compensate for his short arms (32) and average strength.

In an effort to improve his strength, Brooks spent the months prior to his pro day working at the TEST Football Academy in Florida. According to the Daily press, “he went through a training regimen that helped him improve his flexibility and lower body explosiveness… characteristics that could benefit at either guard or center.” That brings up another thing to like about Brooks – his versatility. He played center in the Players All-Star Classic. “I had about 30 plays in the actual game at center,” the second team All-ACC selection told the Daily Press. “I played pretty well.”

While Brooks was obviously disappointed about not being drafted, there was never any doubt that he’d get an opportunity to play in the NFL. Denver, Minnesota, Washington, Jacksonville, Houston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and yes, the Packers spoke to him in the past few weeks. He received over a dozen offers on Saturday night, but chose to sign with Green Bay. The lack of proven depth at center and guard and Thompson’s well-deserved rep for giving undrafted free agents a legitimate opportunity in training camp were probably the reasons he made that decision.
