Exactly. If he wants to continue playing, odds are he will, whether the Packers let him or not. It would be a real shame to see him play in a different uniform. I understand the position of both sides, but like you said, if the doctors OK it, the final decision should be his and his alone. There’s no guarantees of anything in life.

I don’t buy the money issue as any kind of hurdle for Nick gettting the OK to play from the Packers. Certainy if he does play they will insist on some kind of adjustment to his salary if he were to have another issue with his neck. For example Anthony Hargrove has a stipulation is his contract that reduces his salary if he reinjures any old injury that causes him to land on IR. New injuries do not trigger that clause.

I completely understand the reluctance to put a guy in harms way but the facts say that hes really at no greater risk of reinjury as long as hes 100% recovered from the first injury and the surgery to repair said injury. Every single player who has to tackle an opponent has the same risk of a potential neck injury as Collins does.

Good question. Collins received a big chunk of money (I think around $14M) in the first year of the deal, but I’m not sure how much of that was base salary. The way the contract was structured, I doubt there would be a big cap hit if he were released.

Was his bonus paid all up front? If not, I would think the cap hit is big even if he doesn’t play.

Great article. I feel the same way as you. As much as I’d love to see Collins back, and as much as I’d hate to see him in a different uni- I would hate it even more to see him carted off the field again.
